Quick Answer
Most foreign residents can leave and return to Japan within 1 year using the free "Special Re-Entry Permit" — no application needed, just check a box at the airport. For trips longer than 1 year, you need a Regular Re-Entry Permit (¥3,000 for single, ¥6,000 for multiple).
Special vs Regular Re-Entry Permit
| Feature | Special Re-Entry | Regular Re-Entry |
|---|---|---|
| How to get it | Check box on departure card at airport | Apply at ISA before departure |
| Validity | 1 year (or until visa expires, whichever is sooner) | Up to 5 years (or until visa expires) |
| Cost | Free | ¥3,000 (single) / ¥6,000 (multiple) |
| Extension possible? | No — cannot be extended abroad | No — typically need to return within validity |
| Who can use | All Residence Card holders | All Residence Card holders |
When You Need Which Type
| Situation | Recommended Permit |
|---|---|
| Short vacation abroad (under 1 year) | Special Re-Entry (free) |
| Long-term assignment abroad (1-5 years) | Regular Re-Entry (¥6,000 multiple) |
| Moving abroad permanently | None needed — but consider impact on PR eligibility |
| Visa expires in less than 1 year + traveling | Renew visa first, then use Special Re-Entry |
| Permanent Resident going abroad for 1+ year | Regular Re-Entry (critical — or lose PR!) |
🚨 What Happens If You Forget
If you leave Japan without a re-entry permit, or stay abroad beyond your permit's validity:
Your residence status is LOST. This means you are generally expected to apply for a new visa from scratch to return to Japan. For Permanent Residents, this means losing your PR status — even if you've lived in Japan for 20+ years. There are no exceptions.
ℹ️ Tip for Permanent Residents
Always get a Regular Re-Entry Permit (multiple, ¥6,000) before traveling, even if you plan to be away for less than 1 year. Unexpected events (medical, family) can extend your trip. The Special Re-Entry cannot be extended from abroad.
