Disaster Preparedness in Shinjuku — Guide for Foreign Residents

Japan experiences earthquakes, typhoons, and other natural disasters regularly. Being prepared can save your life. Shinjuku ward provides multilingual disaster preparedness information and has designated evacuation sites throughout the area.

Step 1: Know Your Evacuation Site

Each neighborhood has designated evacuation sites (避難所). Find yours on the Shinjuku City hazard map. Major evacuation areas in Shinjuku include Shinjuku Gyoen, Meiji Jingu Gaien, and local schools.

Step 2: Install Alert Apps

Install Safety Tips (multilingual disaster app by Japan Tourism Agency) and NHK World app for English emergency broadcasts. Your phone should also receive J-Alert earthquake warnings automatically.

Step 3: Prepare an Emergency Kit

Keep a bag with: water (3 days), food, flashlight, radio, first aid kit, copies of important documents (Residence Card, Passport), and cash.

Step 4: Participate in Drills

Shinjuku conducts annual disaster prevention drills. These are open to all residents and provide hands-on practice.

Yes, all phones sold in Japan receive J-Alert earthquake early warnings automatically. If you brought a phone from overseas, install the Safety Tips or Yurekuru Call app.

Q: Where do I go during a major earthquake?

First, protect yourself (drop, cover, hold on). After shaking stops, if your building is safe, stay inside. If not, go to the nearest designated evacuation site.
